Spend time outdoors and enjoy a healing wellness boost from Mother Nature

June is a great time of year to embrace the warmer weather and sunnier skies that Mother Nature brings us. Breathing in some fresh air and connecting with nature is a wonderful way to give your wellness a boost! June 10 is recognized as National Get Outdoors Day, so there’s no better time to honor your own health with some outdoor therapy.

There’s loads of research supporting the many physical, mental, and emotional benefits of spending time in nature. It can motivate you to be more physically active, improve your mood, reduce stress, allow you to unplug from technology, help you feel more grounded and focused, and even connect you with people and your community.

I’m honored to work with an awesome nonprofit organization called Working Well that’s devoted to fostering a healthy, thriving workforce through an intentional focus on workplace well-being. Every fall, we host a community event called the Corporate Cup Challenge, which, as we like to say, is “the most fun you’ll ever have with your coworkers outside the office!” Teams of four coworkers compete in physical challenges at a scenic outdoor venue with a focus on fun, fitness, camaraderie, and a little friendly competition. It’s such a fun event that treats participants to a big, healthy dose of wellness in nature!

It’s easy to get caught up in busy routines and spend the majority of your day indoors without even realizing it. Maybe you’re the outdoorsy type and, like this Florida girl, spend as much time as possible outside. Or maybe you need a little inspiration to help motive you to soak up and appreciate your natural surroundings more often. Here are some ideas to get your imagination rolling. Pick one and dive right in!

  • Walk your dog. Don’t have your own pup? Offer to walk your busy neighbor’s dog.
  • Take the kids on a scavenger hunt in a park or neighborhood. Give them a list of items to look for as you explore.
  • Ride a bike to a new destination and do some sightseeing along the way.
  • Invite friends to go camping.
  • Do some yard work or offer to help an elderly neighbor with theirs.
  • Walk to a nearby grocery store when you just need a few items rather than driving your car.
  • Enjoy a mindful moment lying on a blanket under a shady tree gazing up at the leaves and birds.
  • Search for animal shapes in the clouds.
  • Pay attention to the wildlife when you’re outside, enjoying their sounds, colors, and behaviors.
  • Research natural landmarks or state parks within driving distance and bring family or friends on a mini adventure.
  • Join a community sports league and make new friends while getting exercise and fresh air.
  • Use your work breaks for outdoor walks. Leave your phone at your desk.
  • Get out of the conference room and schedule small meetings as outdoor walking sessions.
  • Swap out happy hour or coffee meetups with friends for outdoor walks or picnics instead.
  • String up a clothesline in your back yard and hang your laundry to dry in the fresh air and sunshine.
  • Go for a swim, float down a river, or splash in the waves at the beach.
  • Find the best fishing holes in your area and teach yourself or someone else this handy skill.
  • Play on a playground with the kids.
  • Grow a garden in your yard or community space, starting with herbs or simple, easy-to-grow veggies.

What’s one way you’ll enjoy a wellness boost in nature today?
