Life really is better with yoga. I’m reminded of this every time I step onto my yoga mat. And the feeling remains long after I step off. I’m reminded of it every time I get to share the healing powers of yoga with others through teaching. Every time I enjoy my own personal yoga practice – just me on my mat, honoring all that body offers me in the moment. Every time I encourage sometime to give yoga a try for the first time or revisit it after a long hiatus.
Yoga nourishes. It nourishes your body. It nourishes your mind. It even nourishes your soul. It challenges you physically. It calms you mentally. It opens you up emotionally.
Yoga has brought so much into my life that I can barely remember living without. It’s here to stay. Yoga is a lifelong practice. A journey for the mind, body, and soul. I never would’ve predicted it. I never would’ve believed what a tremendous impact it could have on my physical, emotional, and mental wellness. Yoga will forever be a part of me and who I am. It’s now woven into my human fabric. I love that it’s always there when I want or need it. It doesn’t judge me or punish me. It doesn’t chastise me for taking occasional breaks to allow an injury to heal. It welcomes me with open arms. Always. It meets me where I am in the moment and provides me with exactly what I need. Nothing more. Nothing less.
If you’ve never given yoga a try, stop waiting to be more flexible or have better balance or learn the names of the poses and postures. Your body and mind will learn all those things in time! I promise. You will not regret taking the leap.
As a yoga instructor, I quickly discovered that my very favorite class participants are newbies. People who’ve never done yoga before, would never step foot in a yoga studio, and feel intimidated by the seasoned yogis they see flaunting their fancy poses on Instagram. What a way to improve my own well-being! I took something that I initially tried for myself to see what I might get out of it, and in turn, I ended up sharing it with others – further improving my own well-being (and theirs!) through the joy and fulfillment I felt by helping them focus on their own self-care.
Sometimes I regret that yoga didn’t become part of my life sooner. But I trust that it found me at just the right time, exactly when it was supposed to. Do you ever feel that way about things? Maybe a person or activity or skill or passion? I try to give this feeling a warm hug to let it know I appreciate it and then move on to actually enjoying the person, activity, skill, or passion. This is what’s so wonderful about exploring what best fuels your health and happiness. There may be something truly spectacular patiently waiting for you right around the corner – you simply have to be aware and open and ready to discover it.
